Liverpool Baltic Triangle building work begins

Contractors have started work on converting five buildings in Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle district into a new hub for creative businesses.

Regeneration company Baltic Creative has appointed Nobles Construction to develop the buildings off Jamaica Street so they can be leased to creative or digital firms.

The Baltic Triangle area, which stretches from Wapping to Parliament Street, Park Road and St James Street, has been largely neglected for many years and is now seen as ripe for regeneration as a creative quarter.

Organisations including the A Foundation and the Contemporary Urban Centre have already set up in the area.

Last year Baltic Creative was formed as a “community interest company” to develop five empty buildings and turn them into homes for other small creative firms.

The £5.2m investment plan is funded by the Northwest Development Agency and the European Regional Development Fund.

The first phase of construction work on the Baltic Creative project is believed to be worth £600,000 to Everton-based Nobles, which beat off competition from a number of national contractors to secure the contract. Peter Linford, director at Nobles, said: “Liverpool is such a vibrant city, alive with all aspects of culture, and it would certainly benefit from the addition of a dedicated creative area.

“We’re delighted to be working on such an important scheme, which will bring the area to life and secure future investment for the city.”

Jenny Douglas of Liverpool Vision said: “This brings the vision of a creative hub at the heart of the city closer.

“Liverpool’s reputation as a business location is going from strength to strength, and this project will create another asset for the city’s business reputation, creating new jobs and levering in new investment.”

Other successful businesses in the area include Elevator Studios, a converted warehouse on Parliament Street that houses businesses such as digital design agency Milky Tea.

Businesses in the district have also pulled together to launch new website www.baltictriangle.co.uk

Liverpool-based developer LAG Pritchard has been developing parts of the Baltic Triangle, building the Hampton by Hilton hotel and 190 apartments. Last month the Daily Post revealed Pritchard was planning another development including 100 more apartments, a 95-bedroom care home, a second hotel, and a new youth hostel.
